Rising New Zealand alt-rock duo Midwave Breaks are set to ride the airwaves once again, with their cracking new single and ultra-radio-friendly tune In The Face Of All We Know.
Described by the band as:
“an upbeat track that puts a hopeful twist on the notion that life is not black and white, there’s always an ‘other’ side to any story, and that ultimately, if we can respect each other’s differences, maybe we could all just get along”.

Recorded in a farmhouse in rural New Zealand, In The Face Of All We Know was mixed in the U.S. by Grammy Award Winning Engineer Mark Needham, most notable for his work with The Killers and Imagine Dragons. The final touches were applied in New York at renowned mastering facility The Lodge, with the end result being a hook-laden alt-rock-pop tune poised to light up the airwaves.
A powerhouse of song-writing, production, musicianship, and live performance, the potent pairing of singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist Bruce Conlon and exemplary drummer Paul Russell is driven by the energy of the creative process. With each player displaying an innate ability to craft songs that capture a feeling and a moment, the two effortlessly combine a melting pot of musical influences from past to present, delivering a modern take on the soundtrack of their youth.
Since launching in 2021 with their debut single, Midwave Breaks have made an explosive impact at rock radio with Lemonade Hand Grenade blowing up across the country, peaking at number 3 on the NZ Radioscope Rock Chart, and spending over 12 weeks in the Top 5.
Their purposefully retrospective sound, epitomised by 80’s-90’s alt-rock, evokes hints of Springsteen and Petty, Cornell and Vedder, and with a further 4 independently released singles in the Top 20 over the past year, their sound has landed a direct hit, resonating across the rock radio audience.
An instant audience and radio rapport is hardly surprising considering the band’s history. Paul Russell is a former member of the iconic multi-platinum-selling Kiwi band Supergroove, as well as a performer with the hit West End musical Stomp, and was inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame in 2014. Bruce Conlon brings his own accolades as a multi-instrumentalist, respected solo artist, and winner of two International Song-Writing Awards. The pair share a long history, first crossing musical paths at Lynfield College circa 1989, and through the late 90’s co-founded Auckland rockers Eight, whose album release Moving achieved significant rock-radio airplay, and certified Gold sales via Song/BMG.
Bringing a heart-felt authenticity and musical versatility to the stage with their performances, the duo recently made the live connection to their audience with a sold-out debut headline concert, followed by a successful string of support shows nationwide around New Zealand.
Fans can expect more shows to be announced as we head into summer, stay tuned!
