LISTEN TO CANDY HERE
Following the success of their previous collab, the deliciously ethereal lo-fi hip-hop rap synth track Swimming, Hans. and Imugi 이무기 join forces again for their latest alt-dance banger Candy. With this, the trio serve up an infectiously popping tune set to spark a dopamine surge in your brain.
Hans. and Yery take turns to deliver their unique flows over Carl’s funky bass line and hand-clap beats, before blending together in a feel-good silky-smooth, mellifluous finish. This dance-floor catnip is sure to get you in the party mood and hooked with one hit. Collabs don’t get much sweeter than this!
Hans. relays: “Even though we’ve worked closely together, over COVID we didn’t get to see much of each-other. So I had Yery and Carl over at my home studio, and we were just mucking around playing each-other music and catching up.
The song itself was an idea Carl already had, that Yery and I started writing to straight away. The whole track really came together in around 30 minutes. Half of Yery’s vocals and my verse are actually straight from the first one-take demo we did. There’s something real fun and spontaneous about the song, and I think how it was created really plays into that vibe.”
Shot and edited by Luke Park, the video to Candy was produced by ABG, a newfound Asian label of Auckland artists making their mark in the NZ underground music scene. Imbued with a darkly comedic vibe, the video is characteristic of Hans. and his friends’ tongue-in-cheek take on the day to day drama of inner-city living.
Adds Hans., “The whole video was shot in about 5 hours. Which runs in line with how spontaneously the song itself came about too. Everything about this one just felt so natural.”
Prepare for the sweetly innocent addictive shot of Candy to be your new obsession; compulsive listen; top of your jam playlist. All you can do is give in, crank it up to 11 and join Yery’s sweet and catchy:
‘I got candy, my teeth gon’ rot; I got candy, my teeth gon’ rot; ‘I got candy, my teeth gon’ rot; I got candy, my teeth gon’ rot’.…
Hans. and Imugi 이무기have worked closely together their entire careers, and the trajectory of their musical successes are on a parallel with each-other with both having released lauded debut projects, and local and international plaudits from peers and music media alike.
Swimming was most notably praised by Chaeyoung of K-Pop super-group Twice, whilst also being a DJ favourite for dancefloors across the world. In line with the K-Pop connect, the artwork for Candy is designed by esteemed Korean fine artist Yeon Yeoin, who has worked with the likes of Red Velvet and Bibi in the past.
The soon to be released 3 track EP project wraps up a solid year for Hans., having played sold out dates locally, toured Australia with UK group Easy Life, and having recently been announced for Laneway Festival 2023 in Auckland.
Hans. continues to impress as one of our most inventive and fertile creatives, and his work stands out due to his own distinctive brand of progressive alt-dance low-fi rap and hip-hop. Easily one of the best in the underground Australasian club scene, keep your ear to the ground and your eyes peeled for Hans.’ ever-increasingly bright light.
