Reinforcing her growing reputation as one of Pōneke’s most exciting new acts, Goodnight My Darling has today revealed her debut self-titled album; a contemplative body of work, cleverly crafted to take the listener on a soul-stirring journey.

To celebrate the release of the album, Goodnight My Darling is currently on tour. It kicked off in Auckland earlier this month and continues in Whanganui on Thursday, November 24; Hamilton on Friday, November 25; Levin on Saturday, November 26; Wellington on Friday, December 2 (with Ingrid & The Ministers); and Kāpiti on Saturday, December 2 (with Greta O’Leary).

The tour gives audiences in Aotearoa the chance to experience the magic of Goodnight My Darling, AKA Maxine Macaulay, who has this year been teasing the release of the album with a string of powerful singles. They include the moving ode to love, loss and rebirth The Carriage; the hard-hitting Until I Return and The Trees Have Eyes, which touches on the end of a relationship.

The nine-track album also contains stand-out tracks, the soft-swaying Moving Away; He Died in May, which is a story of loss and redemption and the simply gorgeous and nostalgic Nights.

It makes for an impressive debut, showcasing the breadth and depth of Macaulay’s talents, not only as a songwriter and vocalist, but also as a producer.

“The album and the journey of making it has been about the evolution of self. It's about transforming energy in the moment into something tangible, such as song, poem, music, art,” explains Macaulay.

It also serves as a reminder of the past few years, in which the world has faced unprecedented times.

“It represents a collective experience, with the pandemic being at the forefront of my mind, but deeper than that, a snapshot of time and space. This relates directly to the themes in the songs but also applies to the making of the album. For this project I really reached out collaboratively, more than I have ever done artistically and this has elevated my work,” she says.
