Way That We Feel is a dusty n’ gritty groove, which perfectly captures the beautiful ugly of love and commitment.
“The bones of the song come from the concept that you can’t hide from love, even in times where you can’t stand to be around each other and just need to take some space or you’re feeling scared and vulnerable. At the end of the day, you can’t help but feel that way that you feel. Trust that love can prevail,” says TOI’s Jules Blewman.
“It’s the reality and paradox of struggle versus reward, and the acceptance that although there will be hard times on the journey, it will always be worth the mahi.”
Way That We Feel came about when three members of the band - Jules Blewman, Conway Jeune, Luther Hunt – did a writing session with Auckland-based songwriter, producer, guitarist and engineer Abraham Kunin (Homebrew, TEEKS, Avantdale Bowling Club).
“We sat around the room for a bit discussing relatable topics and with a slightly cheeky smirk on his face, Luther brought in the topic of love and the wāhine in our lives. Once we had a concept, the tune was created really quickly and organically,” says Jules.
The writing session came to an end for the day but the band still didn’t have verse two.
“We all agreed that as four men writing the song, it would be great to get a woman’s perspective on the topic, to give some balance. So we gave Zoe Moon a call and within a few days she sent us back this amazing verse, which just blew our minds!,” adds Jules.
“Giving a woman’s perspective is a tall order,” says Zoe. “So I wanted to speak to the process that I go through when faced with love and commitment. There’s so much risk there, especially for Black Women. Once I heard the drums and bass line I was inspired to channel my West Indian roots and to pay homage to where this kinda music calls home.”
And what the dynamic pairing has created is nothing short of magic. Conway’s signature smooth and laid-back vocal delivery creates the perfect moment for Zoe’s jaw-dropping entrance, which elevates Way That We Feel to a sizzling, sultry union of striking proportions.
