Soft Plastics are proud to share their new single and video for Disembody today. They are also announcing their debut album, Saturn Return, which
is out on 31 March 2023 with help from Coffee Supreme.
Saturn Return is the hotly anticipated debut album from Te Whanganui-a-Tara three piece Soft Plastics. Coming off a run of blistering
shows supporting Fur Patrol and taking the stage at The Others Way, the garage darlings have hit the studio to capture the full texture of their fuzzed-out sound.
Their latest single and music video for Disembody reimagines the rehearsals you have with yourself in order to prepare for difficult conversations.
Director Stella Reid says, "When I first heard the song I thought a lot about the out of body experience you have during a break up. There’s an inability to speak, to admit something. We practice these difficult conversations, over and over, in our head. In my line of work I’m constantly rehearsing these big dramatic scenes; yet they’re always in stark contrast to my stilted experience of these conversations. I wanted to play with this contrast — and thankfully the band were excited by this idea too."
"Disembody strikes the balance between raw emotion and humour that Soft Plastics does so well. It has playful performances, and a chance for the band to rock out. There’s still something that drives Soft Plastics songs forward — even at a slower pace, they never take their foot off the gas," says Reid.
"This song and video is a pretty accurate indicator of what you can expect from our debut album, Saturn Return. We're looking forward to sharing it with everyone," says singer/bassist Sophie Scott-Maunder.
The music video for Disembody
was made by Stella Reid (Director) and Bill Bycroft (DOP).
Made with support from NZ On Air.

Curating a wide range of influences, Soft Plastics’ music defies easy categorisation. Ranging from sun-bleached surf pop to swelling shoegaze, the pieces are arranged with an investigative eye and a throughline of dry wit.
Recorded and mixed byJames Goldsmith, and mastered by LA's Will Borza, Soft Plastics’ have created a captivating and generous record. It will feel bracingly familiar for anyone who has been put through Saturn’s wringer, and provides an illuminated pathway for those among us still ticking off their twenties.
Sophie Scott-Maunder (she/her), Jonathan Shirley (he/him), and Laura Robinson (she/her) make up Soft Plastics, an indie rock trio based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa. Theyformed at the end of 2019 and quickly released an eponymous debut EP, whose songs were instantly playlisted across Aotearoa's Student Radio Network.
Since then Soft Plastics have released an array of Student Radio and RNZ hits including heartfelt ballad
My World / Your Girl, moody shoegaze tune Loozer, and doom-disco track
Day Job, which was made with support from NZ On Air. In 2022 they released the first single off their upcoming debut album, Easy to Forget.
The group have toured throughout Aotearoa and are a household name in the indie rock scene. They have appeared alongside Silicon and King Sweeties at the Parrotdog's 10th Birthday Party, opened for
Marlin's Dreaming, The Beths and Hans Pucket, and performed at indie festivals such as Newtown Festival, Rad Fest, Welcome To Nowhere, Slow Note 2021,
The Others Way and Great Sounds Great.
