Her early success as Janine and the Mixtape saw her based in the States and touring heavily. These days, simply known as Janine, the multi-talented artist has chalked up a list of spectacular accolades, including tens of millions of streams on Spotify alone.
Janine returned to visit New Zealand in 2021 with the goal of reconnecting with her roots, the music industry and fans while visiting family. While at home, she suffered the sudden loss of her beloved father, which led to her staying in New Zealand to be with her mum. Dealing with a mountain of grief meant releasing music took a back seat for a while.
Being home, however, reignited Janine’s connections with fellow musicians and so the first seeds of new music were sown, including If I Call, which she took to longtime friend, Auckland-based producer Will Henderson, who played keys in her band in the early days.”
“Creating this song back home with my day one friend and collaborator felt really special. We’ve both developed and grown so much since the beginning but still have the same fun creating,” she says.
If I Call seamlessly pairs floating melodies with deep punchy lyrics over a cross of electronic and ethereal layers and heavy hitting drums. It also comes laden with meaning. “It’s about the moment you realise that someone you thought would never let you down, will. It's the moments of pain and confusion before the distance, acceptance, release and strength of going separate ways.”
Supported by NZ on Air, If I Call was mixed by Erik Madrid and mastered by Chris Gehringer and is accompanied by a visualiser made by Paige Strabala.
After parting ways with her major US label a few years ago, Janine has reclaimed the fierce independence that saw ‘the Mixtape’ soar in those first years and it shines through on the powerful If I Call; setting the scene for what fans can expect from her album out this year.
