Impostor Syndrome Conclude Their Acoustic Live Sessions By Tackling The 7 Minute Progressive Monster 'Plastic Eyes'

10 May 2023 - 0 Comments

Impostor Syndrome is a rising alternative rock band based in Tāmaki Makaurau, New Zealand. The band was formed in the early 2020's with a shared passion for creating unique and impactful music. Their sound is characterized by a mix of powerful vocals, driving beats, and atmospheric instrumentals that come together to create an emotionally charged soundscape.

Plastic Eyes 'Live Acoustic at the Brian Gerrard Theatre’ completes the trilogy of live acoustic renditions of three of their album tracks, recently filmed and recorded by the band at the Brian Gerrard Theatre, Birkenhead, Auckland. The long-format tune was originally conceived by guitarist Shannon Coulomb and vocalist Ryan Culleton sometime in 2007 in the same acoustic format, so the two musicians were excited to revisit the first song they wrote together.

The first song to drop from their debut album Oriens last year, the seven minute Plastic Eyes made a clear musical statement about the ambitious nature of the band. The tune is a slow burner that augments through multiple sections before resolving into one final shout section, not dissimilar to the way a Big Band may do so, but done in Impostor fashion. Lyrically, Plastic Eyes is a trip to the edge of sanity and back again, all the while exploring the positive change that can be brought about by losing oneself for a time, but coming back stronger.

Impostor Syndrome’s writing process is generally always done acoustically and the band thought it would be fun to share the more raw side of their playing, which not only acts as a glimpse into their creative process but allows them to test the waters for future live performance, which they are working towards realizing with a full band. The band is made up of lead vocalist Ryan Culleton, guitarist/multi instrumentalist Shannon Coulomb and drummer Scott Nicolson. Their music is heavily influenced by a wide range of artists and genres, including alternative rock, post-punk, and shoegaze. The band is dedicated to using their platform to address important social and political issues, and their lyrics often touch on themes such as mental health, self-discovery, and the search for identity.
