Spirit Boy shows its intimate side on third single 'Runaway'

19 May 2023 - 0 Comments

Ōtautahi indie-rock group Spirit Boy will share its most intimate song to date when the band releases Runaway on 2 June.

Runaway is a steep departure from the 80's stadium-inspired rock of the band’s first two singles. Instead, the song sees frontman Ethan Mead lean into his love of folk and Americana, creating a sparse and moody soundscape that complements the song’s melancholic theme: the emotional duality of knowing that a relationship is falling apart yet not wanting to accept it.

“The loneliness you feel when you can see that the end is on the horizon but you’re not yet ready to step away – it can feel unsurpassable like the world around you is falling apart. The realisation that you can never be as close with that person again is pretty heavy,” says Mead.

“It can feel totally isolating at the time but it’s something most people will go through at some point in their lives. I want Runaway to be a comfort to people – there’s something beautiful about a shared human experience like that.”

Runaway will be available to stream on all digital platforms from 2 June, and provides a taste of the band’s nine-track album, to be released in mid-2023. A companion video to Runaway will be released on the same day, directed by filmmaker Caleb Macdonald of Kita Films. It will be the second collaboration between Spirit Boy and Macdonald, with Macdonald having produced and directed the ambitious one-shot video for the band’s debut single Adolescence which garnered national media attention earlier in the year.

To celebrate the release of Runaway, Spirit Boy will play Christchurch’s Space Academy on Friday 2 June, with support from Holly Kimber and Ellie Oak. Tickets are available from Under The Radar.

Spirit Boy are: Ethan Mead (vocals/guitar), Regan Barker (guitar), Sam Burt (keyboard/piano), Talon Adams (bass), and Mason Head (drums).
