Over a year in the making, Alphabethead and Young Gho$t} are finally ready to uncork the follow up to their award-nominated debut album, Bad Taste - the aptly named Bad Taste II. The pair have been working silently in their shambolic Whanganui record-room/home-studio and now emerge with 14 tracks of Hip Hop psychedelia to take unsuspecting ears by storm. Equipped with an eclectic sound palette drawing heavily from 1970's Prog Rock and Spaghetti Western Film Soundtracks, this is a body of work that is both sonically varied and entirely cohesive, made with love and inspired by the sample-heavy, crusty creation of artists such as Madlib, RZA and MF Doom.
Lyrically adept and furious at society, Young Gho$t tackles a range of social issues in an off-the-cuff satirical fashion, speaking to the wider malaise of the planet in general, including brushes with topics such as global warming, the mind-numbing effect of social media and the increasing homogenization of society. Coming from the perspective of a human mind caught in the centre of it all, his words range from collectedly calm to manically meaningless, indirectly addressing the futility of the human condition with a number of barbed jabs aimed at whatever it is that society considers "normal'. Not content with dwelling on rampant negativity, this is balanced by a carefree attitude, aimed at uplifting the listener, serving as a contrast to the prevailing monoculture, which is built around a race to the bottom. This record advocates for self-medication to avail yourself of societal sickness, be it through food, drink, marijuana, psychedelics, meditation or recreation. Bad Taste II is both your worst dream and your greatest nightmare - but don't just take our word for it; if time and will are on your side, please take a listen.
Bad Taste II will be supported by the duo's first countrywide tour, with stops planned in Whanganui, Pōneke, Ōhinehou and Tamaki Makaurau. Flanked by a diverse cast of talented support acts we cordially invite you to come be serenaded by the dual-headed advance of Young Gho$t's lyrical creativity and Alphabethead's turntable wizardry.
