Delving into the realm of pop-punk, I Don’t Care steers Leigh away from her soulful, melancholic roots. A make-believe land of thought for suppressed uncomfortable emotion, the lyrics explore the complexities of the modern phenomenon; FOMO. Sewn with catchy one-liners and addictive haunting melodies, I Don’t Care showcases Marianne Leigh’s versatility as an artist, carving her unique place in the indie-pop corner of music.
In January of this year, Marianne Leigh moved across the world solo, from New Zealand to London, in pursuit of creating bigger opportunities for her music career.
“London was always a question for me, a dream that felt unattainable”, Leigh details, “I just had to explore the music world here”.
A product of international effort, Leigh architected I Don’t Care in her hometown, Auckland, New Zealand, alongside Ryan Cruickshank.
The young artist recorded her vocals at London’s Visconti Studio, a studio built in partnership with Grammy award-winning Tony Visconti. A series of late night Zoom calls and mixes sent back and forth sculpted the final product, Emily Wheatcroft-Snape painting the finishing touches on I Don’t Care from New Zealand.
“The creation of I Don’t Care was unlike anything I had done before. It was very much a 21st century experience”, the homegrown artist details.
The upcoming single holds a mirror to one’s most inner thoughts, the song at its core, buried under upbeat production, being about insecurity.
“I write from a personal place, this song in particular being a way to untangle my thoughts surrounding self-comparison and turn them into something digestible. Writing my deeply buried fears into the unapologetically fierce pop-punk genre was really important to me.”
On June 28th Marianne makes her London headline debut at Troubadour, celebrating her release alongside London based acts Marchant, peafloom and Rosie Webb.
