James Constable’s new album, Interesting Times, is being independently released to all platforms today.
Interesting Times was made with the backdrop of change, both personal and global. As a result, the album covers many ideas that concern us today, with songs about being in love (Young Man, I Do), out of love (Our Song, I Want To Save Someone), and even tackling topics such as mental health (Asylum Kitty, Keep An Eye On Cadence), and the war in Ukraine (It’s Difficult To Smile). Interesting Times also has a wide range of musical influences, including the iconic indie of The Smiths and R.E.M., the pop sensibility of The Beatles and Crowded House, and the Kiwi flavours of The Mutton Birds and the Dunedin Sound. These influences and lyrical themes meld to create an album of catchy indie pop rock that has something for everybody to enjoy.
The album was recorded over the span of nine months over the start of 2022. Most recording took place at James’ home studio in Rangiora, North Canterbury, with additional recording taking place in Christchurch, most notably at LOHO Studios, and SOLE Music Academy, where he was a student until the end of 2022. The album was preceded by two singles; I Want To Save Someone in November 2022, and Sirius Is Rising in March this year.
James has made a bit of a splash in the Christchurch music scene over the past few years, having gone from playing small open mics to playing large events such as the North Canterbury Wine And Food Festival, and playing a number of headlining shows in the city. During the recording of ‘Interesting Times’ he began to play further afield, having made his Dunedin debut at the Nook and Cranny Music Festival in May 2022, and playing his first headlining show in Auckland at The Wine Cellar in September. James also released his most recent album, Tui, in June 2021, which has received over 2000 streams on Spotify and received critical acclaim. He also completed the Artist Development course at SOLE Music Academy in 2022, and is now pursuing an audio engineering degree at MAINZ.
