Songs From Home follows on from their 2021 self-titled debut EP and is a combination of nostalgia and fresh pop, capturing an eclectic approach to pop music that ranges from melancholic-retro layers to soul inspired disco blends. The EP includes previously released singles Temple, Floating Away and When It Comes, alongside quirky-chill lounge track Baby Blue and See You Dancing - a Jamiroquai-meets-Earth Wind & Fire, Daft Punk influenced track.
“This EP has a curious nature and we had a really fun time exploring how the cross-overs of musicalities could form something that is unique to us as artists,” explain NOVA. “We wanted to create a series of songs that integrated the musical influences of our past and the progression of pop culture from today and into the future. We were ambitious about developing a reflection of our aspirations that include elements of indie-rock, pop, disco, soul and 70’s funk. This EP is an ode to bringing a spectrum of genres together. ”
NOVA says that new single See You Dancing expresses the “hungry urge to burst out into the night and communicate through dance.”
“It’s about coming into a grounded, confident version of yourself and allowing that to be expressed through movement and sharing the dancefloor through the night with people who have the same desire,” explains NOVA. “We wanted this song to highlight the essence of letting go, even if its just for one night, and putting worries to the side for later. This track has a slight darkness to it, an edge that hasn’t yet showed through our other tracks. It gradually picks up layers as the song progresses and evolves into a Jamiroquai-inspired dance track.”
NOVA’s made up of Wellingtonians Bryn van Vliet and Eliza Pickard, but are also joined by musicians Phoebe Johnson, Conway Jeune and Luther Hunt. Songs From Home was made with support from NZ On Air’s New Music Development scheme and partially recorded at Massey Studios with engineer Dave Carter and producer Anna Edgington, and also Surgery Studios with engineer Lee Prebble. The EP was then mixed and masters by Ben Horton (Benny Tonez).
