Seth Haapu unveils stunning album of wellbeing, 'Whai Ora'

14 July 2023 - 0 Comments

Award-winning Aotearoa artist and producer Seth Haapu has today unveiled his greatly anticipated new album, Whai Ora, as well as the Pacific soul focus waiata and title track, Whai Ora.

Listen to Whai Ora  HERE

Whai Ora is a coastal cruise of Polynesian falsetto, with liquid velvet lush harmonies immersed in soulful melodies and R&B rhythms. Consisting of 10 incredible tracks, the album sonically explores a fresh and exotic blend of taonga pūoro with digital production, lyrically diving deep into a journey of healing, reconnection, and aroha.

“My new album emerged from the depths of loss and enlightenment that followed,” reflects Seth. “I went on a sacred journey of healing, reconnection and aroha; it led me home to the shores of Tahiti for the first time in generations. Whakapapa was foundational to the creative process; realising our eternal bond with those past, present, and future.”

Co-produced and mixed by Kody Nielson, the album came together with “the combined mana of mātanga reo, artists, musicians and songwriters, who generated a force of collaboration and creativity.” Featuring an incredibly impressive array of talent and skill, Whai Ora includes Sir Tīmoti Kāretu, Maisey Rika, Hana Mereraiha, and Te Karehana Gardiner-Toi aka TEEKS.

“I found strength in the support of the community, emerging from my sole practice to rediscover the power of collaboration,” says Seth. “The whakataukī comes to mind, ‘Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi engari he toa takitini’. My strength is not mine alone, but it is the strength of many.”

Also out today is the lead waiata and title track, Whai Ora. A hook-laden, new wave Pacific Soul waiata, Seth describes Whai Ora as a “state of mind. It's about being present, connected, and held through change.”

“‘Whai’ means to be equipped with, have, or acquire and ‘Ora’ means life, health, or vitality,” explains Seth. “I chose the name for both the title waiata and the album, because it is an affirmation of life through the ebbs and flows.”

Today’s album release follows the recently released singles, Tropical and Rongoā. The poly-funk track Tropical reached #14 on the Hot 20 NZ Singles Chart, with both tracks receiving widespread support from radio and TV across the country.

Today for Aotearoa’s Matariki, listen to Whai Ora. “The spirit of this record is oranga (wellbeing) achieved through the interconnectedness of all things. It recognises that balance and harmony in relationships lifts wellbeing. This record is a symbol of healing and a way to naturalise holistic healing located within te ao Māori.”
