Aotearoa’s indie-pop artist Bridges unveils hauntingly cinematic new single and video, 'Gone'

Aotearoa indie-pop artist Bridges has today released her expansive and emotive new single Gone, along with the boldly captivating accompanying visualiser.

Dark, atmospheric synths create a bed for Bridges’ delicate vocals, before slowly opening up and expanding into a cinematic pop chorus with driving guitars, for a stunning, emotive release.

Gone is about going through the motions of a break up; from reflective and melancholic grieving, through to proper confusion over how it could end like this; all the way to anger and a full-blown release,” explains Bridges.

“It’s six months of processing the loss of somebody who was in your life every day, to suddenly just not at all - condensed and jam-packed into a three minutes and 31 second journey.”

Produced by Rāwiri Waters and mixed by Wellington-based James Goldsmith (Mermaidens, Wiri Donna), the single was mastered by the LA based, Grammy-winning engineer Brian Lucey.

Gone has undergone many transformations in how I’ve performed it,” reflects Bridges. “It’s been played as an acoustic track, a rock anthem, a super upbeat and clean pop tune; but nothing felt quite right. It wasn’t until I went right back to the dark, and almost desperate feeling I felt when I wrote it, did I feel like the final produced track landed exactly where it should.”

Also out today is the accompanying lyric video. Consisting of one long, continuous clip, the visuals feature Bridges in a moody state of slow motion; bringing focus to the vulnerable and often angsty lyrics.

“I wanted to create something super simple, to draw attention to the lyrics and let viewers feel their own feelings in watching and reading it,” says Bridges. “I filmed it with Rāwiri Waters in my backyard - it’s kinda funny, because the video’s so serious, but behind the scenes Rāwiri was fanning me with a giant piece of cardboard to create a ‘gentle breeze’ for my hair, and my eyes were watering like crazy! I think the neighbours thought we were nuts.”

Gone is the second single to come from Bridges’ latest chapter, following the upbeat and empowering track,
Pills. Supported by NZ On Air, Pills received widespread local media coverage including features on MTV, Sun FM, and The Hits, with playlist inclusion from the likes of Spotify’s The Local List Aotearoa, and Apple Music’s Breaking Pop and New In Pop.

Christchurch born, Auckland-based Bridges (aka Rachel Hamilton) is quickly gaining momentum after transforming her sound from an acoustic singer and songwriter into a fully fledged indie-pop act, performing live with her powerful four-piece band. Recently opening for Aussie breakthrough act Teenage Dads at Auckland’s Tuning Fork with her captivatingly bold and engaging live act, Bridges is just getting started.

Soak in the cinematic sounds of today’s release and get ready for more to come. With a penchant for meaningful and clever songwriting, Bridges is without question a rising talent, who deserves your full attention.
