Indie-alternative artist First Reserve introduces themself with a lush love song 'no one thinks we're cool' with an anthemic hook.
"...It'd be so beautiful; if it weren't so sad --" are the first words sung by First Reserve on his debut single No One Thinks We're Cool. This feels appropriate because despite being a love song, there is something of a haunting sadness that echoes throughout the track giving it a distinctly bittersweet feeling.
First Reserve is the recording pseudonym for Ryan Connaghan (he/they), and his style of songwriting has been cherished through the music he wrote for former band Haven. The trio played across Aotearoa New Zealand extensively, sharing the stage with local legends PARK RD, Wet Denim and Flaxxies, as well as appearing at 2022's Soundsplash Festival in Hamilton. Now, Connaghan has fully immersed himself in the First Reserve mantle and aims to deliver their debut EP in early 2024.
Produced and mixed by Joe Ledword (Arlo Mac, Wet Denim) and mastered by Chris Chetland (Lorde, Marlon Williams), Connaghan describes the release of No One Thinks We're Cool as a “long time coming… I wrote the song in 2021 and it's changed a lot since then. It gives me kinda like a prom night song, one that's either super sweet or soul-crushing based on whether or not the person you asked to go with you said yes.”
The track is the first single from First Reserve's debut EP, scheduled for release in early 2024. In a live setting, they are joined by a three-piece band. Keep an eye out as First Reserve will be announcing more music and live performances in the remaining months of 2023.
