The Naked and Famous’ Thomas Powers returns with introspective, cinematic new single 'Falling Down The Stairs'

Thomas Powers, co-founder of the award-winning synth-pop band The Naked And Famous, has today unveiled Falling Down The Stairs; the second single to be released off his upcoming, anticipated debut LP set for release at the beginning of 2024.

Introspective, minimalistic, cinematic; Falling Down The Stairs is a stunning collision of sonic worlds. Classically-infused and soaked in emotive strings, it ebbs and flows from confessional indie, to sparse electronica.

Falling Down The Stairs is about the road to empathy through recurring cyclical conflicts in a long-term relationship,” says Powers. "I start the song by pouring oil on the fire of a feeling, but as the music changes at the outro, so do I, and my self-centered concerns are abandoned. My first single, Li (feat. Chelsea Jade), was a song about needing support; whereas Falling Down The Stairs is about learning to give it."

“The beginning of my solo project was me exploring my interest in neo-classical/soundtrack music - naturally, I recruited Rob Moose (Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Phoebe Bridgers) for help with strings. When he sent me this arrangement, I knew I had to explore this theme as its own piece. Sensible Anomie (the b-side to Falling Down The Stairs) is the outro motif from the single; isolated and reimagined.”

Today’s release is the second single to be released off Powers’ debut LP, following the ethereal track Li, which featured fellow New Zealander Chelsea Jade. Li received incredible local media support, from the likes of RNZ, Newstalk ZB, Rolling Stone Magazine, Sniffers, and more.

“The ethereal song gently reduces the soaring euphoria of The Naked and Famous’ early music, the sign of a maturing sonic outlook. Powers’ hushed vocals are pushed to the fore, the wispy electronic soundscape providing gentle backing to his whispered words. It’s a mellow offering, certainly, but there’s plenty of subtlety to enjoy in the understated surroundings of the song.” - Rolling Stone magazine.

Powers’ formative years in New Zealand are punctuated by the meteoric rise of The Naked & Famous; where in 2010, they burst from hometown heroes into international stardom with their double platinum, synth-soaked superhit Young Blood. In following years, The Naked & Famous would go on to release four more albums featuring critically acclaimed Hearts Like Ours and Higher. Now finally stepping out from behind the curtain, Powers’ solo debut positions him centerstage, breathing life into an airless, electronic soundscape that cannot be ignored.

Thomas Powers’ debut LP will arrive in early 2024 and features artists such as Julien Baker, Chelsea Jade, Rob Moose, and Now Now. Delve into the cinematic soundscape of today’s release and get ready for more to come.
