Aotearoa’s No Cigar return with the perfect summer soundtrack, the cruisy new single and video, 'Cool'

Indie-alt-rock act No Cigar have today unveiled the summery new single and video, Cool. This is the fourth single to be released off their upcoming album The Great Escape, out on November 24.

Cruisy and packed with gorgeous electric guitars, Cool is the new summer soundtrack for driving with the windows down along the coast. The upbeat and lively vocals play off of a succinct rhythm section, expanding into a hook-laden chorus.

“Following on from the laid back first releases from the upcoming album, The Great Escape, Cool steps it up a notch, with delicate tonal changes and dynamics throughout,” says No Cigar lyricist Willy Ferrier. “While mildly spacy and dreamy, it retains that genuine No Cigar sound.”

Made with support from NZ On Air, ‘Cool’ was written on a writing trip up in Mangawhai, where No Cigar wrote the majority of their upcoming album The Great Escape. Cool was produced and mixed by Connor Jaine (Mako Road, Flaxxies, Casper, Summer Thieves, Dolphin Friendly).

“This song came together very naturally in the room up in Mangawhai,” explains Willy. “It was the first of the three brand new tunes we wrote on that trip (Make It Better and These Are The Days were the other two). As with the rest of the album, we wanted to capture the energy of the room as we played the song, so recorded it all together. This was different to how we approached our debut album, Bienvenido, which was more of an instrument by instrument basis.”

Also out today is the track's accompanying video: a live take of the band performing Cool, the footage gives an “insight into the recording process, and how we’ve tackled this album.”

Cool is the fourth single to come from No Cigar’s anticipated forthcoming album The Great Escape, following the raw and punchy single Concubine and the melancholic track The Vibrance (Somebody To Blame). Make It Better, the first single, debuted at #11 on the NZ Hot 40 Singles Chart and received widespread local media support, including a feature on Rolling Stone Magazine.

No Cigar have quickly risen in the ranks of the New Zealand music industry as a band to watch. After recently releasing their debut album Bienvenido in September 2022, the band have gone on and played at some of New Zealand’s most exciting music festivals and sold out New Zealand and Australian tours over the last summer. The boys are currently touring the northern hemisphere playing headline shows in the UK and Europe; their London show selling out in less than a day.

With singles 1999, Some Nights and Say No More playlisted on ZM, Radio Hauraki and The Edge, No Cigar’s infectious chiller tunes have fast become a favorite with fans locally and abroad. Their track record has amassed over 6 million streams on Spotify alone and gained a monthly listenership of 155,000+ fans.

Dive into today’s release to get ready for their album The Great Escape out on November 24. With each release in the lead up acting as a “palette teaser for the album”, there’s lots to be excited about. “Only one month until the whole album is out…we can’t wait.”
