The Mara Reveal Exciting, Sassy New Single 'Mr. Professor Man'

10 November 2023 - 0 Comments

“Teacher, teach us that we’re broken. They don’t see we are the chosen. Disorder or superpower? Rise up and they’ll see…”

Taranaki alt-rock band The Mara today release an energetic, rebellious anthem to inspire the people and celebrate diversity through it’s danceable rhythms and stank face-inspiring bass lines. From the mysterious eastern European accordion melodies, to the pounding, dancy ska beat in the verse, the delicious basslines and the kick-in-the-face anthem chorus, this song is the definition of a “certified banger”.

This vibrant, high energy tune is totally synonymous with the signature sound and overall direction of The Mara, as they pursue their inspirational goal of delivering empowering, danceable and feel-good bangers.

Singer Jordan Jones is passionate about celebrating our human differences through music – leading to a collection of songs with Latin, African and many other world influences. His goal is to make tasty kiwi routed music which ties together flavours of music from around the world and this song is no exception, tying Eastern European/Jamaican Ska sounds into its ‘anthem rock’ foundations.

Says Jordan “I came up with the song while contemplating the struggles I had as an ADHD child growing up in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I remember the feeling of rejection as I faced a world that didn’t understand my ‘condition’. What I have now discovered to be a kind of ‘Superpower’, school taught me to believe was a curse, something wrong with me and worthy of punishment. I want this song to inspire people to tap into their differences and dissolve the myth that neurodiversity is a limitation…”

“Shove your detentions, I’ve got potential superpowers in me. Energy on tap, go diagnose that. Attention to all who teach…”

For Jordan, something special is the collaboration involved in making this song. “I remember showing the song to the band with just the guitar and vocals, and our bass player (at the time) Phil Hoskin immediately played this distinguishable bassline over the top that inspired the best stank-face. I was sold. Barbora then pulled out her secret weapon, the accordion, added her mysterious melodies and it was at that moment I realized we had a banger on our hands.”. The song was produced by Chris Foreman of Swampshack Studio, who adds his own wild and dubby flair which the band loves.

The band is currently working with award winning cinematographer, Jared Jones, to create a fun and exciting music video set in a 90s school, following a storyline aligned with the theme of the song.. This will be released a few weeks after the song itself.

Meanwhile Jordan and his band mates Barbora Varnaite, James Mora, Richard Grant, Angela Froitzheim and Tom Roberts look forward to playing 7 booked gigs this summer including TSB Festival of Lights in New Plymouth and ‘Summer In Waihi’ festival.
