The definition of a cultural and creative renaissance man, Samuel Gaskin is channelling his Māori and Nigerian roots imbued with a message of love and hope in his new single Pressūre, out today. As their first released music of 2023, this year has seen Gaskin on a full national tour for Reckōning: Te Waiata Paihere Wairua; an intercultural exploration into indigeneity and ancestry, showcasing and elevating Indigenous songwriters and dismantling outdated ideas of identity. Gaskin took to the stage of the Sydney World Pride Blak & Deadly Gala at the Sydney Opera House, following his 2022 win of the Victorian Multicultural Award for Excellence Arts award for his efforts in music and theatre.
While lead single Reckōning found itself added to Apple Music’s New Music Daily and New In Electronic playlists, follow-up single Rāin provided another look into Gaskin’s creative output, with the track being added to Double J, RTR FM, MTV Upload, and both the Blak Australia and Deadly Beats editorial Spotify playlists, while also receiving airplay from Triple J, Koori Radio, RRR, JOY FM, and SYN, and also being used in a promo video for the Yirramboi Festival.
A picture of internal survival and struggle; rising and reaching above your deepest fears is rendered by Gaskin’s candid lyrics "Feel it in my soul it’s a pressure in my bones and I can feel it in my soul it’s a different kind of hope, and I can feel it in my soul". “What I love about it is that whilst it directly addresses the struggles of life you can still feel the “hope” and the “love” and that’s what I will continue to lead with," explains Samuel Gaskin.
As the current Victorian Vice President for the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA), and a speaker for Beyond Blue since 2016, Samuel Gaskin continues his role as a passionate activist for diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry, wholeheartedly campaigning to support as many talented people within the community as possible. With a new production on the way plus new music and big plans from his BIPOC LGBTQI+ led and focused entertainment company Beat Entertainment, with advocacy, and touring, Samuel Gaskin's intentions are simple, "to share his music and message with as many hearts and minds as possible ."Photo Credit: Michelle Grace Hunder
