Band & Musician News - Sin City Release New Single 'Candy'

Sin City Release New Single 'Candy'

26 February 2024 - 0 Comments

Melbourne-based NZ Country/rock 'n' roll reprobates Sin City have been tearing up stages across Australia, New Zealand and Europe for the last few years, touting and touring their exceptional debut album Welcome To Sin City (2022) and the EP Something's Cookin' (2023). Now, following the release of their recent single Am I The One You Love, they reveal the frantic, breakneck honky tonk sound of Candy, ahead of their sophomore album in April.

Recorded last year on analogue reel to reel tape at Sound Recordings in Campbells Creek, VIC, the song, which premiered on Swinging Doors on PBS FM, is about the familiar experience of a touring musician – a fleeting romance you find while on the road, as singer and keyboardist Nick Armstrong explains, "When you eventually see they've moved on and are happy, you can't help but be a little bit disappointed! But passing flings can't last, and you have to accept it. That's what this song is about."

In terms of the sonics of the track, the band wanted "a song that captured the faster, louder side of Americana/country tinged rock n roll." They definitely nail that goal with the song hurtling along with unbridled energy, swagger and verve. Guitar solos dive-bomb across the drums, bass and piano rhythm section as the urgent vocal – part David Johansen (New York Dolls), part Paul Westerberg (The Replacements), part Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes) – tumbles forth.

Check out the video clip (selected for CMT broadcast), filmed and edited by James Morris, below for a taste of the freewheeling irreverence and authentic musicality of Sin City in full flight.

Sin City were formed in the arid streets of Alicante, Spain where longtime friends (both previously of garage punk rockers The Cavemen) Nick Armstrong (piano, organ, vocals) and Jack Beesley spent several months writing songs inspired by their mutual love of country, soul and rock 'n' roll records of the 1950's, 60's and 70's.

Soon enough they were back on their home shores of Aotearoa/New Zealand and recording an album under the guiding wing of producer, and Kiwi country Svengali, Delaney Davidson. The result, Welcome To Sin City blended everything from Marty Robbins to Mink Deville and was released in 2022 to much local acclaim, with tracks featuring on the soundtrack to NZ murder mystery series The Brokenwood Mysteries.

The duo promptly crossed the ditch to Melbourne and expanded their line-up to include the permanent fixtures of Christopher Hockey, Andrew Blackman and Cameron Hicks. This five-piece powerhouse have since been tearing up the floorboards of pubs and dive-bars across Australia with their heady mix of 70s rock 'n' roll and country-soul, gracing the stage with local and international greats including Jenny Don't & The Spurs, Sweet Talk and Foggy Notion.

Out this April, the band's sophomore album Another Round sees Sin City poised to deliver their rough and rowdy sound to wider audiences across Australia and the world.

Candy is out now digitally via Bandcampstreaming services and Amrap for our community friends across Australia.
