Known for crafting immersive and evocative musical journeys without the use of lyrics, Wedgwood’s Sounds Escape project boasts two concept EPs before this most recent release. With Midnight Drive, Sounds Escape has once again elevated the art of storytelling through instrumental music.

Regarding his inspiration for Midnight Drive, Wedgwood confides: “My entire life I have felt a deep, deep loneliness. I can’t explain it, I don’t understand it, and I can’t make it go away. I have tried to fill the void with all the things you can imagine… And while I can’t erase it, sometimes I can escape it.”

Wedgwood goes on explain: “When I was a teenager, I used to escape my loneliness by getting in my car and just driving. Away, from anywhere and to nowhere. I would turn the key in the ignition, and push play on the stereo. Music was the ever-present soundtrack to my escape.”

During the Covid lockdowns, music became his escape once again. Only this time, instead of being a fan and trying to find the music that made him feel something, he started creating music that captured emotions he was experiencing at that time.

Now – full circle – Wedgwood has created a soundtrack that he hopes will help others escape too.

Midnight Drive is designed for your next car ride.

“Sometimes you just need to escape from yourself, from everything, and you just want to feel something different. This album is an experience I designed for that purpose. At first elated and energised, then captivated and connected, there’s a sense of drowning and discovery and then, finally, hope,” Wedgwood shares. “It’s intended to be a way out of the suffocation of regular life.”

Wedgwood also admits, “this music isn’t for everyone.” But adds that he’s made his musical decisions deliberately. “There are no vocals because lyrics tell you what to think or feel. Instead these are ‘soundscapes’ where the instruments do the talking. The guitars create the emotion, allowing the listener to fill in their own narrative, let their thoughts run freely and connect with the music.”

But, there are plenty who do get it and love it. Sounds Escape music has become a regular feature on driving, study and work playlists.

“It has some of the most beautiful music I am capable of creating, as well as some really fun songs and some that are a bit more out there and experiential. “

Wedgwood’s promise? “If you close your eyes and listen, you will feel something. You will escape.”
