Voodoo Bloo Release Video For 'Cardboard Box Office'

NZ indie rock favourites, Voodoo Bloo, have followed up the recent release of their new single Cardboard Box Office with a super fun video, which sees the band exploring the more playful side to making music.

The Wellington rockers dropped the highly-anticipated Cardboard Box Office a few weeks ago, alongside the B side track, Wowie. Both songs - as well as previously released single Hot Garbage - are from the band’s upcoming album.

For the video, Voodoo Bloo enlisted one of their own – guitarist Daniel Maslen – on directing duties; Jack Ellison Jones on cameras and Reece Hughes on lighting. Tasked with capturing the Cardboard Box Office’s vibe, which blends raw energy with witty lyricism, the band sought to shine a light on the more light-hearted side of music.

“We see a lot of bands make videos where they're dressed up in suits trying to look cool but we decided to make the antithesis to that by trying to make doing business look cool, and make the music part look boring.”

“The concept helps to capture the more playful nature of Cardboard Box Office. We take music super seriously but not ourselves, so we wanted to make something we're super passionate about but don't mind making ourselves look stupid for.”

The song Cardboard Box Office was made after Voodoo Bloo frontman Rory McDonald watched the film, Black Swan. “It got me thinking about creativity and business and how it sucks that we can't just make things on their own merit, and then it made me think about movies and what working on movies must be like, then I started thinking about how much money people make off of movies, so in short: Complete and utter nonsense”.

It was recorded by the band in Wellington and produced by Voodoo Bloo’s drummer Jackson Kidd, Cardboard Box Office was then mixed by Scott Seabright (Alien Weaponry, Mumford & Sons, Six60).

Voodoo Bloo’s album, set for release in June, will be their third full-length LP following their 2022 album The Blessed Ghost and 2020’s debut record, Jacobus. The Blessed Ghost received widespread support from local media, with tracks featured on Radio Hauraki, Juice TV, Bayrock, The Dominion Post and more. Single Small charted in the NZ Radioscope Rock Charts for six consecutive weeks, peaking at #15.
