Defunct Auckland Post-Punk Band Climate Change Unveils Long-forgotten Album 'Pest Sounds'

07 June 2024 - 0 Comments

Way back in the halcyon days of 2017, Auckland post-punk provocateurs Climate Change recorded an entire album of acerbic and energetic complaints across one and a half weekends. "I could have just written three days, I guess, but I feel like it’s important to acknowledge the band got a little rest in the middle. So yeah, one and a half weekends. Anyway, the album, titled Pest Sounds, tackled everything from the (still ongoing) housing crisis to the (still ongoing) obsession with numbers going up destroying the entirety of human existence. The recording files were completely and totally mangled by a real dickhead of a computer. Then a whole bunch of gnarly and frankly unnecessarily dramatic life stuff happened which left all three members temporarily unable to actually play their instruments. Like actually, physically."

Thanks to stunning advances in technology competence over the past 7 years, Pest Sounds has been rescued from the recycling bin and is now available, for free, from a bunch of places like here and here.

"I tried to get ChatGPT to write this press release for me and it came up with this absolute BS: "We're thrilled to finally share Pest Sounds with the world," said [band member's name], [band member's position]. "This album has been a labor of love for us, and despite the challenges we faced along the way, we never lost faith in its potential. We hope our fans will embrace these songs as much as we do. So now I have to write the whole thing myself like it’s the 1800's. Moving on, a more accurate version of that statement is probably: Fortunately for the band, and literally no one else on the planet, all of the things Shane and Doug were yelling about 7 years ago continue to suck so this thing is somehow still terrifyingly relevant."

Climate Change is an Auckland-based post-punk band composed of Shane Warbrooke (The Bemsha Swing, A Crude Mechanical), Doug Dilliman and Hamish Scott (The Sea Plus).

Seriously, we wrote a song about Mike Hosking and he got so mad he spent two hours on his radio show talking about how not mad he was. Classic. I know I just broke the sacred press release illusion of pretending it wasn’t written by someone in the band but it’s late now and frankly if you’re still reading this far down I reckon you’re on board enough to not be too disappointed.
