Emerging NZ pop artist Jessica Leigh releases her latest single 'heaven to me'

14 June 2024 - 0 Comments

Hailing from Nelson, the now Auckland based singer-songwriter Jessica Leigh has today released her exciting new pop single heaven to me.

Listen Here

heaven to me is an upbeat, euphoric pop song about having a sapphic crush, sonically inspired by the likes of Cyndi Lauper and ABBA.

The song was written by Jessica Leigh, Bray Jeffries and Josh Naley aka Wells* (Foley, Riiki Reid, Navvy, PaigeBridges) and recorded at Auckland’s Parachute Studios.

Created with NZ On Air new music development funding and is the first of a collection of upcoming singles in collaboration with producer Wells* as a result of the funding.

The song leans into Leigh’s classic hopeless romanticism and continues her streak of infectiously catchy synth pop releases.

Jessica’s songs are inspired by the technicolour, emotional spectrum of youth and the storytelling within them often depicts vibrant, visceral coming-of-age narratives, reflecting on themes such as young love, friendship, growing pains and everything in between.

The young artist's success began in 2019, when she took out first place at a regional songwriting competition. She began releasing music shortly after, starting with her debut EP 17 in 2020, which quickly accrued over 300,000 plays. Sophomore EP summerland followed in 2021, with the lead single Summer Royalty gaining over 40k streams and being selected for multiple editorial playlists.

In 2023, Leigh continued to shine with the release of glittery synth pop gem Wired and piano ballad missing you, both earning spots on spotify playlists like Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds Pop. Wired gained over 215k streams and CHR radio play in New Zealand, while entirely self-produced missing you charted at number 17 on the Hot NZ singles chart.

As well as being a skilled producer herself, Jessica has collaborated with prominent producers on both sides of the Tasman, including Wells* (Foley, [Navvy}, Robinson) and Liam Quinn (Peach PRC, Ruel, Ūla). Her sound is fresh and distinct, championing vibrant synths, 80's-inspired drum machines and infectious pop melodies inspired by the likes of MUNA, Taylor Swift and Lorde.

Growing up with a deep adoration of fine arts and literature, Leigh’s attention to aesthetics shines through - especially in her lyrics - which reflect on themes pertinent to young love, heartbreak, friendship and identity.
