Musician/composer/producer Nathan Haines announces the upcoming release of his new album Notes this August, bringing the new single Belo Dia.

Notes is available here for pre-order now digitally and on vinyl.

Listen to Belo Dia  Here

Belo Dia is a love letter to Brazilian music, bringing warm, evocative harmonies, a smooth bassline and infectious energy. The gleaming vocals weave through the rich instrumental layers, celebrating the joyous and carefree spirit of Brazilian culture with Cuica (otherwise known in Brazil as the talking drum).

Featuring real strings and drums captured by vintage microphones and gear, the track is a soundscape that evokes sun-drenched beaches and the spirit of sunnier climes.

Rachel Clark’s vocals form the centrepiece with a vocal melody doubled with Nathan’s flute, whistling and analog synthesisers, with Jonathan Crayford on piano, bass and string arrangement.

Guitarist Leon Stenning (a former member of Nathan’s live band in the UK) co-wrote the song with Nathan several years ago, and it was a song that Nathan worked on while in hospital when he was undergoing several operations for throat cancer. Now fully recovered, Nathan took the original demo and added additional instrumentation with the result being a track that is representative of his deep love and respect for Brazilian music.

Belo Dia is taken from Haines’ 11th album Notes, set for release August 9. After a 10 year writing & recording period initially starting with UK-based producer Phil Asher, Haines was tasked with finishing the album after Phil’s sudden death three years ago.

While finishing the album, Haines underwent a transformative change in both his personal & professional life, including moving back to NZ, becoming a father, setting up his own recording studio. Throughout this time, he was also diagnosed and has recovered from throat cancer, a hugely difficult time for a person who has made his career using his throat. Given the personal circumstances surrounding the album, Notes truly feels like a celebration of life and features a collection of tracks that are as rhythmically infectious as they are emotionally profound.

Completed by Haines alongside collaborators like Marc Mac (4 Hero), Marc de Clive-Lowe, Jkrive (Razor-N-Tape) and Frank Booker, the resulting album features the jazz-inspired electronic sound which has made Nathan Haines one of NZ’s most acclaimed musical exports and is his most-personal and assured album to date.
