Musician/composer/producer Nathan Haines releases new single Just Holdin’ On featuring New Zealand-based vocalist, and visual artist Eo, formerly of the acclaimed underground collective The Grow Room / Badcrop. The single drops on July 24 and showcases the varied moods of the upcoming new album Notes.

Nathan Haines and producer Phil Asher would often include mid-tempo “listening” tracks to break up the pace of an album. With its slower tempo and chilled Just Holdin’ On hip-hop beats, brings Eo’s laid-back, soulful vocal delivery to the front, while Haines’ saxophone and flute melodies are dripping in longing and yearning.
Built around a beautiful chord progression from Michal Martyniuk on Rhodes, Nathan enlisted Marc Mac (4 Hero) to add some Visioneers-era boom bap beats, which laid the foundation for the spoken word delivery of Eo (Ethan King). The result showcases another side of Haines’ composition and production style on this album.
Available for pre-order now, Notes is Haines’ 11th studio album set for release on August 9. After a 10 year writing and recording period initially starting with UK-based producer Phil Asher, Haines was tasked with finishing the album after Phil’s sudden death three years ago. While finishing the album, Haines underwent a transformative change in both his personal and professional life, including moving back to NZ, becoming a father, and setting up his own recording studio. Throughout this time, he was also diagnosed and has recovered from throat cancer, a hugely difficult time for a person who has made his career using his throat. Given the personal circumstances surrounding the album, Notes truly feels like a celebration of life and features a collection of tracks that are as rhythmically infectious as they are emotionally profound.
