Electrifying alt-rap artist Jujulipps announced the release of her vibrant remix bundle of her single Special! out now. Known for her confident, unique, and explosive sound, Jujulipps explores new sonic avenues for her music presenting these upbeat, rhythmic and fully reimagined interpretations of her track Special!.
Jujulipps has collaborated with a talented team to bring these remixes to life. The three-track bundle includes an extended version of the original Special! song, produced by Abraham Kunin. In addition to Abe's extended version the bundle includes two remixes, one by the talented Elle Shimada and another from DJ/producer extraordinaire jayteehazard.
Elle Shimada, a violinist, producer, curator, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist from Tokyo based in Melbourne, combines thickly layered string lines with heavy new-jazz influenced beats to create an emotive, cinematic, and other-worldly atmosphere. Her debut album Home ≠ Location, released on The Jazz Diaries in 2022, received global acclaim as she journeyed through spiritual jazz and drum ’n’ bass, touring extensively in Australia, UK, EU, USA, and Indonesia. In 2023, she is set to release two singles, About Blank____ feat. Rara Zulu and Mononoke feat. Yami, along with a self-directed music video showcasing her storytelling and curatorial skills beyond music. Shimada has remained true to Jujulipps' style by intuitively infusing the remix with a vibrant, dancey sound. This upbeat and exciting remix showcases the synergy between Shimada's distinctive musical personality and Jujulipps' original style, resulting in a collaboration that feels like a match made in musical heaven.
“I had the privilege of first performing Special! at BigSound in Brisbane, where I met Elle Shimada. I experienced her incredible talent when she performed with Pookie; their performance at BigSound completely blew me away. We later reconnected in Sydney as part of SXSW, which just shows how great Kiwi/Australian artist collaboration can be." Jujulipps explains.
jayteehazard, a versatile and in-demand producer based in Sydney, has spent over a decade refining his talents as a performer, writer, and producer. His impressive portfolio includes collaborations with Australian favourites like Hilltop Hoods, Haiku Hands, and longtime partner Briggs, contributing significantly to the evolution of Australian hip hop. Notably, jayteehazard served as Executive Producer on Barkaa’s acclaimed, ARIA-nominated debut EP Blak Matriarchy and her follow-up Big Tidda. His remix contribution effortlessly ties Jujulipps original flow with a housey, club beat delivering a smooth and satisfying sound that beckons listeners to the dance floor.
Reflecting on the inspiration behind Special!, Jujulipps shares, “I had been working with Abraham Kunin for a while and we were experimenting in his home studio. I showed him some Gqom, a South African subgenre of house music, and that's where things started. At the time, I was listening to a lot of Durban Gqom, specifically Distruction Boyz, which eventually became a source of inspiration for the music Abe and I were working on at the time.”
The remixes featured in this bundle breathe fresh energy into the original, emphasising themes of self-assurance and playful conceit. “This song plays on the cattiness and confidence that comes from a bit of conceitedness—I personally believe everyone should be conceited in some form. You think I’m special? Well, you should!”
The visuals for the remix are being crafted by animation artist Siân Fenwick. “I’m so excited to be working with Siân on the animation process. I felt an animated piece would work brilliantly with the overall feel the song gives individuals. It feels like it was such a natural progression of the creative vision, such a cool collaboration between women.”
Jujulipps hopes listeners find joy and movement in the remix. “Enjoyment—if people get up and dance, that's my job done, ”she says.
The original version of Special! is featured on Jujulipps' debut EP Get That Shot.
