For over a decade, the name Bulletproof has stood for nothing less than the forward thinking futuristic “Neurofunk” style of dance floor Drum and Bass. In the early 90’s, Jay Bulletproof’s relentless passion and devotion to Drum & Bass established him as one of the nation’s leading Drum & Bass DJ’s. However, while Bulletproof still remains just as passionate about Drum & Bass as he ever was (maintaining a heavy production work load for Cyanide and various other international labels), his recent inspiration has come from Dubstep, leading Jay to create his first album completely in this genre, Soundtrack To Forever, released today.
Soundtrack To Forever is a journey through a year of Jay’s life. 2009 was a tumultuous year for him personally. His music is a direct reflection of these times; Love and loss, pain and joy, good times and bad. All of these situations shaped and sculpted Soundtrack To Forever into the piece of musical art that it is.
The album combines Bulletproof’s solo works with collaborations from some of the A-List of New Zealand music talent including Tiki Taane (who sings on the first single and title track - out at alternative radio now), Boh Runga, Isaac Aesili, Deva Mahal, PNC, David Dallas, Milon Williams and Evan Kiljoy.
Soundtrack To Forever also features cream of local Dubstep production, Optimus Gryme and Truth, plus the upbeat sounds of leading UK indie dance heavyweights Spektrum, making this album one of musical diversity never before seen in NZ future bass music.
Whether it be sporting one of the largest repertoires of worldwide 12” vinyl releases of any NZ musician, releasing music on some of the Drum & Bass scenes biggest labels, or perhaps owning the country’s longest running Drum & Bass label Cyanide Recordings and receiving New Zealand Music Award nominations for his works, it’s fair to say that Jay Bulletproof has truly earned his place in the New Zealand music history books.
Bulletproof’s third album Soundtrack To Forever promises to bridge the divide between underground and mainstream dance music. From here, to forever, forever.
