In January 2022, Macho Macho, the post-punk/dance quartet from Te Whanganui-a-Tara, embarked on a journey to Waikino, nestled in the Karangahake gorge. This retreat became the creative cocoon the band had been seeking for several years. For ten days and ten nights they slept on the floor of a remote community hall. Each day, immersed in the summer heat, they wrote and rehearsed, drawing closer to one another and evolving their sound.
The new single Instant Death Chord, is the first piece of music to be harvested from the Waikino sessions. A potent mix of krautrock, Canadian post-punk and cowboy western stylings, I.D.C. captures Macho Macho’s most progressive offering yet, and somehow, they feel completely bulletproof.
Recorded in Te Whanganui-a-Tara at Surgery studios with James Goldsmith (Mermaidens, Beastwars, Wiri Donna), and mastered by Will Borza (Deftones, Tenacious D). Accompanying the music is a hypnotising hand drawn music video written, directed, produced, drawn, edited and animated by the enigmatic Oscar Alty, widely known as the ringmaster of local band Sleeping Village.
