Bunchy's Big Score, the art rock trio known for their raw, DIY style and narrative-driven soundscapes, are thrilled to announce the release of their latest single, Drone Baby on the Water. The single is the third preview of the band’s upcoming album, Happy Birthday Daniel, Johnston!!! Don’t Be Afraid <3, a work that both pays tribute to indie music luminary Daniel Johnston and explores the trials of navigating a hyper-connected, yet isolating modern world.
Drone Baby on the Water offers a gritty yet introspective take on the frustrations of the 9-5 workweek. The lyrics tell a story of how time constraints can erode personal relationships and lead to disconnection. The single echoes the influences of lo-fi pioneers like The Velvet Underground and modern innovators Black Midi and Pavement, blending rich textures and layered noise rock with frontman Max White's evocative lyrics and emotive organ play.
"The song captures the feeling of being on a hamster wheel," explains White. "It’s about what happens when your days are all sold off, and the people who made life worth living start to slip away."
The track's release will be accompanied by a visually immersive music video directed by Kieran J. Dodd, bringing the song’s themes to life through surreal, urban imagery. The band’s DIY ethos is prominent in the video, which juxtaposes nostalgia with the mundanity of a working-class routine, inviting viewers to sink into the hypnotic, sonic landscape Bunchy's Big Score has crafted.
With Drone Baby on the Water, Bunchy's Big Score brings their signature lo-fi authenticity and haunting storytelling to a new level. Fans of the genre won’t want to miss this release, which offers a sneak peek into the much-anticipated Happy Birthday Daniel, Johnston!!! Don’t Be Afraid <3 album.
