Channeling the inner workings of a mother, creative and performer - Ōtautahi-based, multifaceted artist Sally Stockwell has released her triumphant sophomore album Little Triggers.
“I think it’s important to have the courage to make art that is true and authentic to oneself first, and say what you need to say” says Sally, “I hope Little Triggers provokes some thought and perhaps discussion.”
A chilling collection of raw emotion, Little Triggers is an 11-track album born from Sally’s journey of navigating motherhood, while continuing to push the boundaries of what her artistic voice is capable of. Throughout the project, Sally paints a dynamic journey through gritty indie-rock guitars, haunting vocal layers, soaring builds, gentle laments of grief, and flecks of optimism, hope, and motherly devotion.
“Finding my artistic voice and changing identity alongside being a parent has been a struggle,” says Sally. “I think that’s common for many mothers, so I wanted my music to reflect my real-life experiences, helping mothers—especially new ones—feel more seen and less alone.”
A true triple-threat, Sally Stockwell is known for her work in TV (Shortland Street, Outrageous Fortune), Film, and her electric theatre shows - which have toured the country and seen performances at Splore, Auckland Festival of Arts, The Ōtautahi Tiny Festival and Taranaki Arts Festival. Sally’s latest work on stage has been her solo show We’ve Got So Much To Talk About - which inspired the Little Triggers - resulting in a body of work that transcends medium, illustrating her talents across theatre, dance, and music.
Little Triggers features previously released singles Far & Wide and Village, alongside brand new focus-track single Uncovering Me - a thumping, anthemic, and determined vow of self discovery in the face of adversity. The album was recorded and mixed alongside celebrated composer/producer Eden Mulholland (World of Wearable Arts, Royal NZ Ballet, Contemporary Dance) at The Lab Studios in Tāmaki Makaurau, before being mastered by Chris Chetland at Kog Studios.
Accompanying the album - a trilogy of visually cinematic and stirring music videos - with a brand new Uncovering Me video set to be released on November 26! Starring Sally and her kids, the gorgeous videos seamlessly blend intimate details of the artist’s personal life with her effortless presence on screen. The videos for Little Triggers were filmed alongside longtime collaborators Jacquie Nairn (Director) and David Paul (DOP).
With the release of Little Triggers joiningan already impressive list of career highlights - and no doubt many more to come - Sally Stockwell is proving to be an artist unafraid to delve into complex and layered subject matter, through skilful and multi-faceted artistry!
