Remember when conspiracy theories were fun? New Mexico, the latest single from psych-rock duo Ripship, is a psychedelic romp through Roswell.
A story behind a grainy picture of a weather balloon in a newspaper headline, New Mexico is a high-speed alcohol-fueled muscle-car-driving UFO chase through the desert. Ripship have leaned into a tongue-in-cheek sci-fi slant on past releases, and New Mexico is no exception.
A driving synth loop and krautrock drum beat builds a tense pace while screeching guitars evoke the dissonant tones of an alien craft’s landing sequence. Listeners who enjoy the relentless synth and drums on Trans Am's Futureworld or the harsh, siren-like guitar stabs on Dimmer’s Crystalator will find something to love in New Mexico.
New Mexico was recorded and mixed in Wellington, New Zealand by James Goldsmith (Beastwars, Dartz). It was mastered by Brad Boatwright at Audiosiege. The single cover was photographed by Caleb Broadhead.
New Mexico will be released to streaming services on Friday, November 29th, at 12 AM. This coincides with performances in Christchurch and Dunedin on the 29th and 30th, respectively, as part of the six-show Eyegum Scenic Tour with Bad Taste.
