Border Music New Releases

22 July 2010 - 0 Comments

Good afternoon everybody! Eru Dangerspiel has arrived and is pronounced…Stone Cold! Featuring some of the biggest names in NZ Music this release is going to turn some heads! See the attached PDF for more info on the releases for this coming week.

ERU DANGERSPIEL – GREAT NEWS FOR THE MODERN MAN – LIVE AT THE AUCKLAND TOWN HALL

Eru Dangerspiel are a mesmeric 22-piece group (plus choir) led by TrinityRoots drummer and multi-instrumentalist, Riki Gooch, who guides this unique and artistic musical exploration. Gooch has lent his drumming talents to legendary artists such as Bic Runga, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Crowded House and Dâm Funk. He also recently produced Hollie Smith’s acclaimed second album. On August 8 2009, an incarnation of Eru Dangerspiel, which consisted of close to 40 band members, gathered onstage to blend unique live jams awash with visual imagery, exploring the depths of harder edged funk, free jazz and futurism. With visuals headed by Mike Busy (the visual creative behind the live Fly My Pretties shows), and filmed by accomplished director Darryl Ward, the CD/DVD showcases a beguiling blend of multimedia elements. The songs on this CD and DVD are taken directly from the unforgettable one-off, sold-out show performed, filmed and recorded last year at the Auckland Town Hall and captured beautifully in Dolby Digital 5.1, thanks to Roundhead Studios.

Performers: Riki Gooch, Whirimako Black, Jonathan Crayford, Chip Matthews and Julien Dyne (both Opensouls), Anna Coddington, Nathan Haines, Laughton Kora and Fran Kora (both KORA), Isaac Aesili (Solaa, Opensouls), Mara TK (Electric Wire Hustle, Hikoikoi, Fly My Pretties), Parks (Ladi 6), Ned Ngatae (Dimmer), Mike Fabulous (The Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties). Joe Lindsay, Toby Laing and Scott Towers (all Fat Freddy’s Drop), Lewis McCallum, Olga Gryniewicz, Submariner (Che Fu, Feelstyle, Dimmer, The Turnaround), Patrick Pihama (Riki’s uncle!), Ross Burge (The Muttonbirds), Will Rickets (The Phoenix Foundation), The Dangerspiel Municipal Choir.

For Fans of: TrinityRoots, Fly My Pretties, Fat Freddys Drop

SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS – DISCONNECT FROM DESIRE

It’s 2010 and School of Seven Bells aka Benjamin Curtis and Sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza are the keepers of one of the year's most anticipated releases. Before all this they were tapped for tours by Blonde Redhead, Bat For Lashes and White Lies and were also remixed by CocteauTwinsRobin Guthrie and Prefuse 73. “Disconnect from Desire” is the follow-up to the Brooklyn trio’s breakthrough Ghostly debut “Alpinisms”. Produced by Benjaminand mixed by Grammy Award winner JackJoseph Puig (Beck, U2, Klaxons), “Disconnect from Desire” is a complete work—an old-fashioned album from forward-thinking minds, as thematically airtight as it is mind-bendingly gorgeous.

For Fans of: Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Eurythmics

KODE9 – DJ KICKS

Kode9’s grasp on the throat of bass music in 2010 is almost unparalleled. Probably best known to the wider global audience as the label that gave birth to two genre defining albums from Burial, Hyperdub has become one of the most reliable labels out there. Just as likely to release a glut of two and a half minute beat sketches from American beat maker Samiyam or Zomby as sprawling house opuses from Brixton bass bin temptress Cooly G, the label is at the forefront of innovation and it’s something that he has infused into his volume of the “DJ-KiCKS” series.

For Fans of: Hyperdub Records, Burial, The Bug

THE HERBALISER – HERBAL TONIC 1995-2010

Welcome please, the Herbaliser. One of the key acts if not the key act of the middle ten years of Ninja Tune’s two decade journey Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba have used their time with Ninja Tune to effortlessly combine their love of hip hop, funk, jazz and sixties film soundtracks into a widescreen, musical approach to the beat that was as raw as it was intelligent. “Herbal Tonic” shows the musical mastery that a pair of hip hop heads from South West London developed.

For Fans of: DJ Vadim, Coldcut, Kruder & Dorfmeister

JOE PUG – MESSENGER

Joe Pug’s “Messenger” is a truly wonderful record – a record more than worthy of a young singer who’s been hand-selected by both Justin Townes Earle and Steve Earle as a touring partner in the last half year or so and who has built a rabid and significant fan base off the back of his hard work. The initial pressing of “Messenger” comes with an album length bonus disc that features the EP that started it all for Joe, entitled “Nation of Heat”, together with the material from a second EP entitled “In the Meantime”.

For Fans of: John Prine, Justin Townes Earle, Louden Wainwright III

THIS IS HELL – WEIGHT OF THE WORLD

This is Hell have secured not only a loyal fanbase, not only a legacy, but a future being the voice of the hardcore genre. Formed in 2004, This is Hell have toured the country and globe countless of times generating a following of devoted lovers of hardcore music. Now forming a union with Rise Records, This is Hell has a new path of fury and animosity to continue on. A path that will positively be revered by anyone who has ever been a faithful fan of hardcore.

For Fans of: Comeback Kid, Bad Religion, Youth of Today

THE REAL MCKENZIES – SHINE NOT BURN

The Real McKenzies have carved out a role as modern minstrels through a relentless commitment to playing live music over the past 18 years. “Shine Not Burn” captures and delivers the essence of a Real McKenzies live performance. Exploiting the incredible talents of the band’s roster (members of Descendents, Good Riddance, and DOA) the music on “Shine Not Burn” brings to life the experience of a Real McKenzies show without actually being there.

For Fans of: Dropkick Murphies, Mad Caddies, the Pogues

EMAROSA – EMAROSA

Emarosa has a lot riding on their 2nd full length. Expectations are high and the pressure is on. This post-hardcore 6 piece has generated enough buzz to turn heads all over the world. Following a hugely successful Australian Tour Festival (Sound Wave) Emarosa have joined forces with renowned producer Brian McTernan (Thrice, Circa Survive) to deliver this year’s most anticipated work from these gifted Kentucky natives.

For Fans of: Dance Gavin Dance, Thursday, Thrice
