The songs on Real Gods Are Blue's debut album I are short and to the point. You might say 'micro moshes'. The 21 songs waste no time delivering the goods before making way for the next song to do the same. They're here for a good time, not for a long time. A nod to Hardcore Punk Influences.
"Real Gods Are Blue are about using what you have, not worrying about what you don’t have and just making the art".
Finding new ways to share music. Using the process of performing, songwriting and production to create a shareable experience In an effort to take people on a musical journey.
The pre-production process in making this album was a series of live streamed performances from Facebook and Instagram where I would essentially jam with myself.
Playing my custom made guitars live on the “gram” in front of a couple die hard fans. Just letting the music flow and the metal riffs release from my subconscious.
I’ve been playing guitar for years but had spent the year doing singing lessons and teaching myself how to play basic rock drums in preparation for making a solo Metal album.
I would download my live jams and cut out the best riffs. After a while I had an impressive batch of riffs that I could piece together to make songs. This was the birth of the 21 songs that I’ve produced for this album.
“Real Gods Are Blue is an experiment in new ways of working”
When conceiving Real Gods Are Blue the concepts and the big vision was to write 60 songs and choose the best dozen to make the best metal album I possibly can.
I gave myself a timeframe of three years to release 60 songs. Year one is up and it’s time to deliver.
So in essence this album is still me sharing the pre production process. With the absence of a band to play live shows, all I really have to share is the recorded music and the journey of creating the music. By the time my Metal journey reaches its zenith I hope to have collected an audience along the way.
I feel like over the last five years I’ve watched the world turn into a dystopia. I’ve been having big feelings about this. The music I was making previously just wasn’t cutting it when it came to the release of the anger that I have been feeling. I really needed an outlet. So I created Real Gods Are Blue as that vessel.
Like I’ve mentioned I don't have a band but I have found a great way of reaching people with my original music as a DJ.
As much as I would like to have a band it just hasn’t happened for me. But through playing my original music on Vinyl at various spots around Auckland City, I’ve discovered a legitimate way to share the music I enjoy so much.
"My journey has not been in vane. I can verify that 4 out of 5 old codgers will give Real Gods Are Blue a punt if they've had enough to drink. If I can make a few people head bang or pump their fist or throw horns then my job is done."
Being a jack of all trades does have its drawbacks. It's not ideal being the only musician on the project playing all the instruments and recording and producing the album.
But if I waited for the perfect circumstances no Metal music would I make. So this is it. Warts and all.
"I feel the urgency to create. I feel the reaper's hot breath on my neck. One day I will die. Until that day I have music to make. Heavy Metal music to make!"
