80's enthusiasts and sibling electro-synth-pop band Brother Sister are back at it again. This summer they will be releasing a cover of one of their favorite David Bowie hits, Magic Dance. An easy song selection having grown up on a steady diet of 80's films, which the Labyrinth was a huge part of.
“We used to set up the family VHS camera in front of the TV and film the movie, creating our own voice overs, pretending to be goblins and singing along to Bowie”, Taz Thomson (bass and lead vocals)
The band recorded the music video for the song at their recent show at Big Fan 25th Jan - and invited fans to come dressed up in Labyrinth or Bowie inspired attire and Magic Dance the night away.
“Magic Dance has been a part of our live set for a while and the crowd always absolutely love it, so it felt right that we should finally release our version”, says Dave Thomson (synth and lead vocals). “We have had a wild time reproducing the song and putting a fresh Brother Sister spin on it, capturing its essence while adding some new twists such as an 80's hip hop influence. One of the things we love about the song is the banging synth bassline so we have brought it right to the front of our version”.
Brother Sister produce their own music combining Taz and Dave’s voices, alongside Ben Thomson’s driving 80's electro beats and dueling synth lines.
Brother Sister will be embarking on a 5 date tour this summer seeing them perform in Auckland, Christchurch (at Nostalgia Festival), Tauranga, Raglan and Pakuranga (Auckland Music in Parks). Fresh off the release of their charting self titled album with Leather Jacket Records and NZ tour dates with Detroit disco punk band Electric 6.
Brother Sister are Thomson siblings Dave on synth & lead vocals, Taz on bass and lead vocals,
and Ben on drums.
Their sound unapologetically references the rich, nostalgic sounds of 80's cartoons and cinema, but with plenty of surprising flourishes to keep it fresh. Pulsing keyboards, programmed drums, driving bass and dueling melodic hooks are expertly blended to take listeners back to the future. Their live performances are fun, punchy and irresistibly danceable.
Magic Dance Song and Music video is out now on all platforms.
