Tāmaki Makaurau-based indie folkstress Greta O’Leary has today shared her hypnotic ode to longing and surrender, dark and light - with new single Prelude.
Gently placing us in the now, Greta O’Leary is kicking off 2025 with the quiet drawing in of finger-picked guitars, tender vocals, eerie instrumentation, and a rolling rhythm section. Her latest offering, Prelude, is a subtle and unravelling reflection on physical form, place and belonging, and surrendering to what is.
“It’s a signifier of one side of life ending and another beginning,” says Greta. “Prelude is the beginning.”
In 2024, Greta released two enthralling singles, Baby I’m A Singer and Baptised At The Desktop Computer. Both songs saw momentous success; appearing in RadioScope Alt (the latter of which peaked at #1) and Official Aotearoa Music Charts; captivating the Student Radio Network (each reaching #1 on the SRN Top 10); alongside support from the likes of RNZ and RollingStone AU/NZ.
Now accompanied by Prelude, the talented artist takes the listener through the inner workings of her creative world. What’s more, Prelude hints at a bigger project on the horizon and offers a subtle reflection of where Greta’s sound is at. “It’s a meeting of soft, finger-picked folk, and dark, heavier production. A merging of old and new worlds,” she says.
The gorgeous new track was brought to life alongside an all-star team of instrumentalists Cass Basil, Alastair Deverick, Callum Passells, and producer Jol Mulholland at the LAB Studios in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Also released today is a gritty, lo-fi, and raw self-directed music video, created alongside Adam Rohe (DOP). Further capturing the intimate, candid, and compelling nature of Prelude, the stunning new video was filmed through the hand-cut rail tunnels of Taranaki, a historic theatre, and contains clips from western Te Ika-a-Māui / the North Island.
