Stone Clones is a Waikato-based desert/prog rock band who’ve been skulking around the local music scene for a few years. Their music combines elements of hard rock, punk rock, alt-rock, and desert/stoner rock music, infused with progressive elements and hints of blues, jazz, country, and world music. This release is a sign that Stone Clones are hungry and ready to devour everything in their path.
Their debut single, Black Widow, is being released this coming 8th February to all music streaming platforms, or 3rd February to Bandcamp. It was recorded with Casey Messent at The Wardrobe and mixed/mastered by Gwyn Williams, best known as the guitarist in the indie rock/reggae band Rever.
Black Widow was originally written while Calum and Seager were in their previous band. The current version of Black Widow describes the insidiously parasitic behaviour and nature of those who seek to control others in different relationships or situations. These people often hide behind facades and parodies of themselves, concealing their true intent until they take what they can for as long as it benefits them.
“I strongly believe that if this release was held off for another two months, I would have gone insane. It has been such a long road to get here, filled with good and bad times together, learning how to work with each other’s personalities, the experiences we’ve had playing with some great bands around NZ, refining our recording skills, or in the case of Seager and Andrew (ex-Stone Clones drummer who recorded for Black Widow) learning how to record. Seager and I already have had many song ideas for years, I think there are over 500 riffs and half-baked songs on Seager’s PC. We are passionate about our music and this debut release is only the beginning of what we have to offer as musicians.” - Calum, guitarist and songwriter for Stone Clones.
Stone Clones is hosting a single-release show at Ding Dong Lounge in Auckland on 8th March.
Come along and help them celebrate the release of their debut single. It’s been a long time coming. Joining Stone Clones are their friends In Shade, Stag’s Yarrow, and Glitterspit. Tickets are $15 at the door or $10 via the Ding Dong Lounge website. Doors open at 8 pm and will be kicked off by the opening act at 9 pm.
As per Calum’s quote from earlier, this release is only the beginning for Stone Clones. They are highly passionate about their music and have future releases planned. They are currently working on recording more songs in their own space where they will have greater opportunities to explore and experiment with their songs.
