South Auckland’s own Coolies were three teenage school chums Tina, Sjionel and Melissa playing the kind of racket that might have caused Johnny Rotten himself to spin in his grave, had he actually been dead. For a while the band played support to virtually every decent touring band to come through Auckland. The band has released a large variety of material on 7”/12”/CD/CA and had a few lineup changes too over the past 10 years. Raw, lo-fi, brilliant, monumental, totally necessary, accumulation of recordings and soon to be loved by all. The Coolies are legendary for all the right reasons.

Following the ground-rupturing, genre-fusing success of their ballistic debut “Join The Q”, where Pendulum raved about them Radio 1’s Zane Lowe called them “the future of music, what The Prodigy hinted at” and even Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson gave them the rock seal of approval The Qemists return with their brilliant second album. “Spirit In The System” is a bolder and more sophisticated beast in which we see collaborations with Jenna G, Rob Hawkins vocalist for The Automatic, Grime MCs Maxtsa and MC ID, Chantel, singer with Invasion and recent tour-mates Enter Shikari.

Whether working with Flying Lotus, Theo Parrish, Mr Scruff or Bonobo, Triana has been herself and only herself. Triana’s faith was rewarded when she met Simon Green aka Bonobo, who not only featured her on his “Black Sands” album but asked if he could produce her own record. The two of them working with live musicians, both playing and using samples of found sounds to stitch together a soul music both timelessly classic and utterly contemporary. It’s a testament to Triana’s skill and talent that we can listen to the tales of these tribulations and find in them only beauty, emotion and soul.

What began as a rumble in 2009 the excitement is set to reach fever pitch this year with the release of the Young Heretics’ debut album “We are the Lost Loves”. Young Heretics is the brainchild of Melbourne based duo, Matthew Wright and Kitty Hart - eccentric twins, both with a love of warped pop music and sonic invention. The dual vocal attack incorporates theatrical soundscapes, driving beats and a selection of over 20 other instruments to create a very dynamic sound. “We Are The Lost Loves” is one of the most original debuts you’re likely to hear in a long time.
