That scenario is exactly how new group Hallowe’en, a two-piece collaboration between Reuben Winter (Kitsunegari, and ex Bandicoot) and Lliam Powell (Cool Cult), came to fruition.
Having watched each others musical careers evolve in the Auckland music scene, (often through appearing on the same billing), and playing music together a number of times, the duo found creating and playing together was something they enjoyed.
After recording a four-track EP entitled “Bart Simpson” for their own enjoyment, an underground project eagerly latched onto by a number of industry followers, the pair decided to take a more serious approach to the collaboration and so Hallowe’en was born resulting in their debut album “Hallowe’en”.
At heart the album is a pop record with elements of noise rock, but the two have struggled to define their sound often calling it ‘thrash pop’. With influences ranging from “Satan to 808 bass drums to fuzz pedals” the total 10 tracks sometimes lull you into a sense of rhythmic relaxation then kick you awake before you start to enjoy the empirical space they have created.
Winter and Powell are both accomplished musicians and composers and this debut album allows them not only write music and vocals collaboratively but also intelligently showcase their individual musical strengths and abilities either alternatively or collectively through vocals, percussion and guitar.
The resulting album is one offering a broader commercial sound than we have heard from either before and one that should see Hallowe’en quickly gathering a solid fan base.
The album “Hallowe’en” will be released 2nd September online with “limited edition” CD copies being available at their Auckland album release on 3rd September and their Wellington release on 10th September.
