We all know a good pie is the sustenance of any band on the road and there’s no denying The Nudge have put in the hard yards since the album was released. From the Black Barn with Fat Freddy’s Drop to the premiere summer festivals, Coromandel Gold, Kaikoura Roots, Summer Sunday at Matakana, Sounds Aotearoa, the Great Kiwi Beer Festival in Christchurch & Splore. The Nudge has delivered blistering performances from the Catlins to Auckland, and on writing, can be found enjoying a cocktail or 3 as they play-out a one month residency at super club Potato Head in Bali. It’s a long way from Newtown!

Singer and principal songwriter Ryan Prebble is the swampy bluesman. His gritty tone and brutal blues vocals are laced with messages of social values, personal freedom and the ways of love. James Coyle produces savage tones on a vintage organ, that effortlessly swirl around like a Leslie Cabinet, with warm low frequency modulations of keyboard bass that will crisp any crust. Add to the mix the solid base of thunderous, tribal, uniquely funky jackhammer beats of Iraia Whakamoe, and you have The Nudge.
The tight three had already paid dues in bands such as AHoriBuzz, Newtown Rocksteady, Hikoikoi, Spartacus R and Tropical Downbeat Orchestra, before forming The Nudge in 2010, channeling influences ranging from Blind Lemon Jefferson, James Brown, Al Green, to Pink Floyd, Bjork and Can.
The Nudge released a limited edition album Big Nudge Pie in August 2011, a humble representation of the live experience fresh from the oven. Steering clear of typical overdub heavy recordings, Big Nudge Pie is three dudes, one room and lots of mics. Featuring ten tracks that draw on road-tested material, the album was recorded at The Surgery, Wellington. Many pies were consumed in the making of the album.
