With the one-year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street approaching (Sept 17), Minuit have teamed up with New York photojournalist Nina Berman to make an inspiringly apt music video for their latest single ‘Stories for Boys’ from their new album scheduled for release at the end of the year. 'Stories for Boys' will be available for free download.
Berman, a veteran photographer and associate professor at Columbia University School of Journalism, is no stranger to being amidst uncomfortable situations with her camera, and her award winning images capture the expressions, purpose and character in people.
Minuit member Paul Dodge who put together the music video, says that's what they liked about her work.
“As we've always asked in Aotearoa, 'What is the most important thing? It is people, it is people, it is people.”
The band are “completely stoked” to be working with her.
“Nina's photos over that ominous beat are spine-chilling.”
The Occupy movement exploded from a ragged campsite on the doorstep of Wall Street in 2011, to hundreds of encampments on main streets around the world in just a few weeks. The participants were not happy about the vise grip on power by the wealthiest 1%, and took to old school sit-ins demanding “true political and economic democracy for the 99%”.
But Dodge says for Minuit the video is not just about Occupy: “Here's to the watchdogs, the whistleblowers, the non-violent resisters who fight for fairplay and hustle to keep their community honest. That is not an easy stroll through the tulips. Hug an activist today!”
