Lock up your dollies as Fat Freddy’s Drop present a grindhouse marionette music video for new single Clean The House.
Music video Director Mark Williams said the action on screen ticks all the bad-ass boxes - card games, drinking, gun fights and car chases.
Pulling the strings is puppeteer Jon Coddington whose theatrical puppet fiction homage to cult film Pulp Fiction was a hit in the 2012 Wellington fringe festival. For Clean The House Coddington painstakingly sculpted pint-sized marionettes of each of the seven band members before adding the final touches; tiny instruments and bespoke suits designed by noted fashion designer, Nell Styling.
The video opens with Freddys playing a post-gig game of poker. DJ Fitchie throws down a straight flush but as he reaches for the money a fight breaks out amongst the band. Enter a ‘waitress’ who is not quite who she seems, in true noir style she soon raises the splatter count and steals the loot; cue chaos on the mean streets of an undisclosed city. Inter-cut between the action, the marionette band perform Clean The House ‘live’.
Williams is Freddy's videographer and mighty MC, and first struck music video gold with his now classic comedic treatment for Freddy’s break out single, Wandering Eye.
“The marionettes are so amazing it wasn’t until the second day of shooting that I realised I wasn’t working with the ‘band’. Their live section performance is the best of their career and this video proves that not only are they excellent musicians, they can really act too” Williams said.
Clean The House is the second single from Blackbird, the forthcoming studio album from Fat Freddy’s Drop. The single is available now from iTunes and Blackbird is due for release in late June.
