Auckland band Vessel are aiming to board New Zealand’s historic rock flotilla with their debut digital release Friday Drive. The EP extends on their well received demo and sees the band continuously improving their formula of lengthier guitar and bass driven grooves. Newly formed independent label Last Libretto will release a 7” vinyl single this summer and the band is planning a tour around Auckland and surrounding towns to support this release.
The band’s move to Auckland has seen them gigging extensively in a vibrant rock scene as well as making live appearances on Auckland student radio station bFM and Waiheke Radio. The title track Friday Drive is a “song of two halves” - an introductory fable of automotive escapism, followed by a sonic painting of an angst ridden drive across Auckland’s volcanic plateaus.
Childhood friends Ben Blackman (bass) and Ben Martens (guitars & vox) formed Vessel in 2010, quickly graduating from blues-rock covers to performing extended original sets with influences from the likes of The Kings of Leon, and local rockers The Datsuns. A successful run at Battle of the Bands at the legendary Kings Arms saw them make the finals and they have quickly been developing a reputation for solid and spirited performances at a variety of local venues.
