Gay Marriage is a subject that has been everywhere in recent months. From the US Supreme Court to the Beehive in New Zealand, it’s a subject that has galvanized worldwide support and sparked global celebration. Against this backdrop, NZ singing trio Anika, Boh & Hollie have made their latest music video a tribute to the Marriage Equality Act.
“We wanted to do something that would be a joyful celebration of Same Sex Marriage,” said Hollie Smith. “The new laws in New Zealand prove that we’re a progressive country that values human rights. Allowing people to love who they want is a fundamental human right.”
The video for their track Why Don’t We is a raucous and colorful visual journey that features footage of NZ protesters, same sex marriages and the singing trio having a blast. The track is about falling in love, but the images in the video give the words new meaning.
“We’re not a political group, we’re just human beings who are happy to see this right extended to everyone in New Zealand,” said Anika Moa. “The song and the video are dedicated to all the people have suffered for a long time without this right.”
The group has supported the effort for Same Sex Marriage since the legal push began in 2011. Moa said they have been following the movement with great excitement and were thrilled to see it become law.
The video was filmed in a studio in Auckland and features performances from all three divas. There are also guest appearances by Tiki Taane, Can-Can dancers and an impressive hula-hooping-gymnast. It was directed and edited by Ella Rose.
For Boh Runga, the video and the song are both exciting and fun.
“For all the heavy legal language around this issue, we wanted to do something that would bring it back to the happiness of this moment,” said Runga. “Around the country we should all be celebrating and be very proud that our country has taken this step.”
The Marriage Equality Law goes into effect on the 19th of August 2013.
The track Why Don’t We is available for sale on iTunes.
