Sweet Relief came from a season of experimentation where I took time to work with some upcoming artists and producers that I love,” says Kimbra, who is now based in New York City. “I'm a big fan of Redinho's work. We made this track together in London. It highlights our shared love of warped funk and groove royals like Prince and Janet Jackson. For me, the song explores the push and pull of human desire for intimacy, the tension and power of touch, and a liberation of the senses. I'm about to start recording my third album, which is already going in new directions for me, but I really wanted to share this song before I embark on that new endeavour."

This is Kimbra’s first new song since the New Zealand-born singer and songwriter released her second album, The Golden Echo, in 2014, though she released the single Goldmine from the album in 2015, and has been featured on songs by Mew, Bilal, Electric Wire Hustle, Great Danes, SLOWOLF, Big Black Delta, and OWSLA artist What So Not in the past two years. She also performed a tribute to David Bowie with David Byrne and The Roots at the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and at the Prince tribute concerts at First Avenue in Minneapolis in September.

Kimbra’s  2011 debut, Vows, bowed at No. 14 on the Billboard Top 200 and was certified platinum in Australia and New Zealand. Kimbra exploded into the public consciousness that same year with Somebody That I Used To Know, a duet with Gotye that earned her Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The song topped Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 2012 and was the best-selling song of that year in the U.S. It has sold more than 13 million copies.

Kimbra enters the studio next month to record her third album with Grammy Award-winning producer John Congleton (Goldfrapp, Antony and the Johnsons, St Vincent).
