Set for release today (6 July), Fanfickk's newest song Cotton Candy sounds like a meet cute between Icona Pop and Grimes. A sunny, dreamy synth pop track, it's a sharp departure from her recent collaboration with Hybrid Rose on the angry and cathartic Just Press Play, which was selected for RDU's Singles Club in May 2018.
A lyric video for the song Cotton Candy, heavily featuring cute ceramic ornaments and (real) cats, is also being released on the same day. A 3D animated music video is slated for August.
Laptop-wielding skill-optimist Fanfickk is a New Zealand-based electropop star, world famous in her own house. As the only member of Fanfickk, Fanfickk does all the writing, producing and singing herself, usually at home and sometimes under a blanket. This is a glorious arrangement but occasionally still results in inter-band conflict.
Fanfickk's debut EP, Stay Shy, was released in February, 2016. The 4-track EP featured the song Shreds, described by music blog The Revue as "a shimmering electro-pop track that has a touch of Grimes, a dash of Goldfrapp, a sprinkle of Zola Jesus, and a whole lot of Kiwi spirit."
In October 2016, Fanfickk followed up with the single SF Rose, which was written as a tribute to a lost friend. Early this year, she teamed up with fellow kiwi artist Hybrid Rose on the track Just Press Play.
Cotton Candy will be available on July 6 from Bandcamp, Soundcloud as well as streaming services such as Spotify and iTunes.
