Electronic band Brazilbeat Sound System have released Playin’ Games, their first single since Propaganda Machine (2017). Gisborne-based Brazilbeat is percussionist Nego Beto and DJ/producer Mara Weiss.
The funky house-inspired track brings a distinctive syncopated beat with rhythmic percussion.
The lyrics are an honest swipe at the games of the heart that lovers play. An entreaty to give all, and not hang back.
Working with Gisborne vocalist Rhondi (Rhonda Corbett-Bryant) brought a great feeling to the song. “We have created music with musicians from many different places in the world, and recording this song with a vocalist from our local has made it really fun,” said Nego Beto. “We had been working on the production for awhile, then we had a big jam in the studio, and it all came together.”
Brazilbeat produced, recorded and arranged the song; then sent it to Wellington-based producer Maaka Phat for the mixdown.
Brazilbeat Sound System have stood the test of time, kicking off the project in 2001, and still going strong. Despite being based in the small town of Gisborne, their music has a long reach, connecting with listeners and fellow musicians in New Zealand and internationally. They are regulars at Rhythm & Vines festival, having played at the first installation in 2003, and all but one of the festivals since. Over the years they have played at other iconic festivals and events such as Homegrown, Splore, Soundsplash and Sydney Harbour Festival.
Brazilbeat stay relevant, delivering fiery live performances, bursting with thunderous beats and live percussion. Their sound continues to defy genres; best described as global bass, treading the nether-worlds between roots and electronic music.
