It’s true, one of New Zealand’s hardest-working bands has just released their third album.
They have performed at WOMAD, Splore, The Nelson Arts Festival, Cubadupa, Wondergarden, Auckland City Limits, Picton Maritime Festival, The Russell Birdman Rally, the Oamaru Victorian Festival, the Port Chalmers Seafood Festival, Hokitika Wildfood Festival, Chatham Island Festival and Auckland Museum, on top of numerous national library tours and television appearances.
They’ve also had two successful collaborations with The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, played a New Years’ Eve show to 14,000 people in Palmerston North two years in a row, had a capacity show at the Kings Arms, and made 21 appearances over seven days in Australia.
So who on earth are they? The answer may not be what you expect...
It’s Captain Festus McBoyle’s Travellin’ Variety Show, who released their third album Bubbles n’ Squeek on Friday April 26th.
In addition to their live popularity, the band’s albums are also highly regarded.
- Their Debut album A Pirate's Life… was selected as a finalist for Best NZ kids album at the 2012 NZ Music Awards.
- Their Debut video for the song Pirate's Limbo was selected as a finalist for Best NZ kids video in 2012.
Yes - 'Captain' has been spelled 'Captian'.
Cover artist Elliot Stewart is dyslexic, so instead of asking him to correct the spelling, Festus McBoyle and his crew decided it was perfect just the way it was. Because after all, who is perfect anyway? The Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand have given them the nod - it's a great way to raise awareness all round.
