Hobnail celebrate 25 years & NZ Music Month with their take on the Coconut Rough classic, 'Sierra Leone'

02 May 2019 - 0 Comments

Wellington’s Hobnail celebrate their 25th Anniversary in 2019, and will be releasing a Best Of album late in June and touring NZ during June and July. In the lead up they have recorded a ripping version of the 1983 classic Sierra Leone by Coconut Rough, due for release on May 10th. Built around the driving violin of Jo Moir and sung by bass player Hamish Graham, this version pays due respect to the original while giving it a definite Hobnail spin. Hobnail have always drawn from folk/rock influences, and while their take on Sierra Leone falls towards the rock end of that spectrum it will not disappoint long term fans of a band who have always taken an eclectic approach to cover versions to go alongside their respected catalogue of original music.

Live favorites on the NZ Music scene and abroad, Hobnail have won considerable acclaim over their 25 year career. Having headlined everywhere from Canada to Norfolk Island, from Oamaru to Auckland, and racked up multiple New Zealand Music Awards nominations in the process. They are 3-time finalists at the New Zealand Music Awards, once for Best Folk Album with Fortune Horses and twice for Best Country Song for Dead in the Water and Baggage. In 2018 they released their most recent album, Blue Sky Songs to great acclaim.

The tight knit band who come from wide ranging backgrounds and musical influences, have come together time and time again over the years as Hobnail, garnering many very loyal fans of their live shows and numerous releases. Rob Joass (Vocals, Guitar, Mandola), Jo Moir (Vocals, Violin), Caroline Easther (Drums, Vocals) and Hamish Graham (Bass Guitar, vocals), make up the one and only foot stomping, Hobnail!
