Middle of the House begins with the creak of wooden floorboards, a low rumble reminiscent of the nor-west wind, and a haunting solo piano. This all sets the scene for a song that hits deep with claustrophobic childhood memories, and a message for seeing how far you’ve come.
The chorus opens out into the pounding drums, and wavering synths beneath the line “In middle of the house where you grew up, saw the way that you went back into your shell, could feel the cold of your mother - see the marks on the walls, baby how you’ve grown”.
Written during a writing camp at Grove Studios in Sydney, it features backing vocals by Australian artist Alexander Biggs and production by Jol Mulholland. The unconventional song structure, and crisp vocals are a shift for the band – bringing vocalist Brooke Singer’s voice totally to the fore.
